Charles Winston Neathery, 90, of Little Rock, died peacefully on January 28, 2011 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He was born on July 20, 1920 in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Joel Clarence and Lela Frances Neathery. Known as Chuck by his wife, Sallie, of 60 years, and their friends, he will forever be called Winston by his family of origin. A widower since 2005, Chuck recently moved to Durham, North Carolina, with his loving companion and caregiver, Arlene Brunson, to be close to his daughter, Holly and her husband. Chuck served his country with a U.S. Army tour of duty in the Asia Pacific, 1944-1946. He and Sallie started their family in Little Rock, then moved to Houston, Texas, about 1958, where they raised one son and two daughters, and Chuck continued his career with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. An interim move to Canyon Lake, Texas, saw Chuck's retirement from Liberty Mutual and new work with the Haskins Law Firm as an investigator. He and Sallie finally moved "home" to Little Rock to be near Chuck's remaining siblings. Chuck was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. His passions included raising African Violets and Orchids, vegetable gardening and landscaping his homes. He created walls and gates one stone at a time and once transformed an unruly property into a series of lushly planted terraced beds. There wasn't a project too big or challenging for him to tackle. Chuck appreciated all kinds of music and, although he could not carry a tune himself, a beautiful voice would bring him to tears in an instant. To his family, he gave the gift of his time and attention. Every year, the family enjoyed vacations to Mexico, the Gulf Coast, and our country's amazing national parks. Chuck continued his love of road trips both near and far with his "Little Lady" Arlene in their red Mustang convertible called "Redbird". Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sallie Taylor, brothers Harold and Everett, and his youngest daughter, Jenna Annette Neathery. He is survived by his son, Mark Neathery; daughter, Holly Neathery Zemke; grandsons, Joel and Matthew, Trey and Cory; and two sisters, Elsie Pouzar and Martha Carnation. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Friday, February 4, 2011, at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, (501) 224-8300. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 5, at Roselawn Memorial Park in Little Rock, with Reverend Al Terrell officiating. Online guestbook: www.rollerfuneralhomes.com/chenal.
