John Marshall Shackleford Jr.

John Marshall Shackleford Jr., 89, of El Dorado, Arkansas, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital, Monroe, Louisiana, following a motor vehicle accident. Born June 17, 1921, in Little Rock, Arkansas, he was the son of the late, John M. Shackleford and Violet (Mayes) Shackleford. Preceding him in death are his parents; first wife, Hope Hardage Shackleford; second wife, Geneva "Jenny" Shackleford and a brother, William Hubert Shackleford. Survivors include one son, John Marshall Shackleford III and his wife Terri of El Dorado, Arkansas; two daughters, Sheryl Shackleford Wray and her husband Louie, of Kingsport, Tennessee and Cecile Shackleford Taylor of El Dorado; brother, Dennis L.Shackleford and his wife Jane of El Dorado. He was a graduate of El Dorado High School and the University of Arkansas School of Law where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in the United States Army beginning in 1943 with duty in the South Pacific as a Captain in the 43rd Infantry Division. Other combat assignments in which he was involved included the invasion of Luzon. Upon his discharge from military service in 1945, he joined his father in the practice of law in El Dorado. In 1958, they were joined by his brother, Dennis Shackleford. The Shackleford Law Firm continues with Brian Ratcliff and Chase Carmichael. Marshall served in the House of Representatives of the Arkansas Legislature in 1951 and 1953. He was elected to the Arkansas Senate in 1955 serving until 1963. He was admitted to practice law before federal and state courts. He was a member of the Union County Bar Association and a Fellow in the Arkansas and American Bar Foundations. He was a very active member of First Christian Church in El Dorado and served as Deacon, Elder, Financial Chairman and Chairman of the Board. A Memorial graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, February 25, 2011, at Arlington Memorial Park in El Dorado, under the direction of Young's with Rev. Miles Cook and Rev. Tom Whitworth officiating. By Marshall's request, there will be no formal visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 420 N.
