Elizabeth "Betty" Stockley Mitchell

Elizabeth "Betty" Stockley Mitchell, age 86, of Little Rock died Monday July 25, 2011. Betty was born and went to elementary school in Memphis, Tennessee. She and her family moved to a farm in Marion, Arkansas where she graduated from high school before attending Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee, and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. While at the University she married H. Maurice Mitchell in 1946. After Maurice's graduation from Washington and Lee School of Law they moved to Little Rock where she was an active member of the Little Rock Junior League, National Society of Colonial Dames, and Women's Emergency Committee which supported keeping the Little Rock schools open during the aftermath of the 1957 integration crisis. Betty was also once co-chairman of Tabriz at the Arkansas Art Center, and she and her husband were honored as "People of the Year" by the Arkansas March of Dimes. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and being with her grandchildren. Betty is predeceased by her devoted husband of 64 years; H. Maurice Mitchell. She is survived by two sons; H. Maurice "Maury" Mitchell Jr. and wife Lindy, David Stockley Mitchell and wife Peggy, one daughter; Nancy Mitchell all of Little Rock, 2 sisters; Margaret Gregory of Augusta, Arkansas, Mary East of Little Rock, grandchildren; H. Maurice Mitchell III, Hamilton Mitchell, Nancy Mitchell, David Mitchell Jr., Meredith Mitchell, Will Mitchell, Elizabeth Davis, Maggie Davis, and Mary Maude Davis, son-in-law; Dr. Brett Davis of Owensboro, Kentucky and is predeceased by a daughter, Mary Margaret "Mimi" Mitchell Davis. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to her caregivers, Ernestine Hill and Rosine Robinson. There will be a memorial service Thursday at 10 a.m. at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church officiated by Reverend Britt Skarda. A reception follows. Memorials in lieu of flowers should be made to the H.
