Dorothy Eckert Vix

Dorothy Eckert Vix, 93, of Little Rock, went home to be with the Lord, November 14, 2011. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the daughter of William Althen Eckert and Elvina Walt Eckert. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry L.E. Vix, a brother, William Althen Eckert, Jr. and his wife Lillian, and sister-in-law, Verna Eckert. She is survived by her daughter, Karen V. Pingel and husband, Galen of Little Rock; son, Kerry H. Vix and wife, Peggy of Atascadero, California; brother, Kenneth W. Eckert of Little Rock; grandchildren, Christopher Vix (Mika), Michael Vix, Beth Lovins (Ben) and Everett Ellis (Ginny); great-grandchildren, Ashley and Amy Lovins, Camryn and Henry Ellis; and a grand step-son, Jon Pingel, his wife, Beth and their children. Dorothy, or Dottie as her friends called her, grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a young woman she loved to swim. She participated in many swim meets in which she either won or placed. After high school she worked for the Federal Barge Lines for seven years. She met Henry Vix in church and they married on September 10, 1942. Dottie and Henry lived in Metairie, Louisiana. It was there they helped start a new church, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. At Mt. Olive, Dottie became a Stephen Minister, served as President of the Mt. Olive Lutheran Women's Missionary League, was a member and held offices in the Ladies Aid, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School. At Mt. Olive School, Dottie taught kindergarten for 14 years. For many years she was a member of the Metairie Women's Club, serving one year as treasurer. She also was a volunteer at East Jefferson Hospital for 17 years. After Henry's retirement they moved to Little Rock. Here Dottie continued her Bible studies at Christ Lutheran Church and for many years attended Community Bible Study. Dottie loved to play Bridge and she loved her Bridge friends. Dottie gave herself first to her Lord and Savior and then to her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be dearly missed. Services will be held on Friday, November 18 at 10 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 315 S. Hughes, officiated by Rev. James C. Walter. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4-6 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.).
