Laura Lee Garrett Overton

Laura Lee Garrett Overton passed away July 4, 2012. Laura was born February 2, 1944 in Chicago, Ill. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend. She was an educator for 28 years teaching Home Economics and English; she started her career at Chidester, Ark. She was also a teacher a Bell High School in Gurdon. She was part of the integration in Gurdon Public Schools. She also taught at Okolona and Bodcaw (Nevada County). Laura finished her career as Freshman and Senior English Teacher for Gurdon High School. She spent her retirement years as president of the United Methodist Women at Gurdon First United Methodist Church, where she was a lifelong member. Laura was also an accomplished seamstress, cook and organizer. She is preceded in death by her parents Jim and Billie Garrett Overton of Okolona and a brother James Roland (Scooter) Garrett. Laura is survived by her husband of 47 years, Floyd (Jackie) Overton, daughter Sarah Compton of Gurdon and son Jeff (Leslie) Overton of Bryant, three granddaughters, Shanley Compton of Horn Lake, Miss., Jessica Compton of Chicago, Ill. and Allison Overton of Bryant, two grandsons Collin Compton of Collierville, Tenn. and Zack Overton of Bryant. Visitation will be at Pharr Funeral Home in Gurdon, Friday, July 6, 2012 from 6 p.m.–8 p.m. Service will be held at Gurdon First United Methodist Church Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Greg Burk and Rev. Carl Ownbey officiating. Interment will follow in Smyrna Cemetery in Okolona, Arkansas. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Youth Fund Services entrusted to Pharr Funeral Home of Gurdon.
