Charles Lowndes Steel IV

Lt. Col. Charles Lowndes Steel IV, (U.S. Army, Ret.), 67, of St. Augustine, Fla. died Oct. 29, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in West Point, N.Y. in 1945, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy with a B.S. in military art and engineering. He also earned an M.B.A. at Golden State University and a M.S. degree in political science and Latin American studies at the University of Florida. Lt. Col. Steel was a Vietnam veteran and spent 20 years serving his country. Previously a resident of Little Rock and Heber Springs, he moved to St. Augustine in 2006. Survived by his wife, Jeanie Craig Steel, of St. Augustine; son, Charles Lowndes Steel V, and his wife, Sara, of Newport; brother, Christopher Steel of Little Rock; sister, Natalie Zahalka of Heber Springs; and grandson, Charles Lowndes Steel VI. His parents, Col. and Mrs. Charles L. Steel of Little Rock and his wife Deborah Ann Steel predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, 1 December 2012 at St. Francis Episcopal Church Heber Springs. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
