James Edward Holloway

Dr. LTC (Ret. Army) James Edward Holloway III of Hot Springs, Arkansas passed away Monday, April 21, 2014 at his home. He succumbed to the injuries received while serving our country in Iraq. Jim was born in Kansas City, Missouri, November 24, 1943 to Eugene and Dorothy Wolfe Holloway. After graduating from Northeast High School in 1961, Jim attended junior college and later graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. In 1976 he graduated from the University of Missouri with a DDS. He taught at both the University of Missouri at Kansas City and later at the University of Missouri at Columbia until 1980. Jim began a private dentistry practice in 1980 in Columbia, Missouri. He moved his practice to Hot Springs in 1983. He was a member of the Arkansas State Dental Association, American Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology. He served as the secretary/treasurer of the Garland County Dental Society for twenty seven consecutive years founding a newsletter which is still published today. Drafted out of junior college, Jim proudly served in the Vietnam conflict in the 4th infantry Recon Division from 1968 until 1970. He remained in the Army reserves after his return and was called again to active duty in February 2003. Jim served in Kuwait and Iraq for four months before being injured. A Paul Harris Fellow recipient, Jim had been a member of Oaklawn Rotary Club for the past 27 years, as well as, many other community organizations including the Patriot Guard, the Kansas City Hot Rod Club and a thirty year member of Grand Avenue Methodist Church. Cherishing his memory are his wife of 30 years, Marilyn Long Holloway; their son, James Edward Holloway IV; adopted son, Donald Deem (Tonja) of Tyler, Texas; brother, Robert Sterling Holloway of Wheat Ridge, Colorado; cousin, Cheryl Harness of Independence, Missouri; special friends, Donna and Herb James; and a host of friends and colleagues. Marilyn would also like to give special thanks to the Oaklawn Jockey Club, Eric Jackson, the Cella family, Nancy Muncrief, and the late Donna Trant. A celebration of his life with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 25th, 2014 at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander, Arkansas with Rev. Kim Hammer officiating under the direction of Gross Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Gross Funeral Home. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers are: Dean Buffa, Dr. William McLaughlin, Max Forrester, Phillip Rhinehart, Larry Marsh, Phil Barker, and Fred Sweeny.
