James Halley Cuningham

James Halley Cuningham was born in Little Rock, Ark. on March 15, 1931 to Eleanor and Rayburn Cuningham. He grew up in Arkadelphia, Ark. and attended Arkadelphia High School. Later, he attended Monticello A&M before joining the United States Air Force in January 1951. He served honorably in the USAF, with combat tours during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He earned a Bronze Star Medal In Vietnam. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant after 21 years of active duty. He continued to serve as a Civil Service employee for another 20 years. During his Civil Service career he also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Education from Southwest Texas State University. Jim was a dedicated Presbyterian and a member of the Good Shepard Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and then an Elder. He married the former Jacqueline Orton in Warren, Ark. in 1954 and they were together for 60 years. He is survived by: his wife, Jacqueline; daughter, Catherine Floyd, her husband, Carroll Floyd; his granddaughter, Kimberly Muniz and her husband, Rey Muniz; his son, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Cuningham USMC, his wife, Letty Cuningham; his grandsons, Nicholas Cuningham (a 3rd Class Midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy) and Jacob Cuningham; brother-in-law, David Orton; nieces, Alisha Orton, Anne Lobel, Karen Churchwell; nephew, Brad Orton; and seven great-nieces and nephews. Interment will take place Tuesday June 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, Texas7X 78209. A memorial service will take place following at 1 p.m. at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 735 Cedarhurst, San Antonio, Texas 78227. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.
