Lynn H. Cox

Lynn H. Cox, of Little Rock passed from this life on May 27, 2014. He was born to the late Dewey and Elsie Copeland Cox in Murfreesboro, Ark. on July 19, 1927. The family lived near Delight in the Pleasant Home community until 1935, when they relocated to Dyess Colony under the Works Progress Administration Rural Resettlement Program. Mr. Cox attended school there until he graduated. He spent two years in the Navy at the end of World War II where he served on a mine sweeper in the Philippines. Upon returning from the South Pacific, in 1946 he married his childhood sweetheart and farm neighbor, Nadine Strawn, and was widowed in 2005. He enrolled in the University of Arkansas and, after attending two years, began teaching in his hometown of Dyess. He continued his education at Arkansas State University and the University of Tennessee at Memphis State where he obtained his undergraduate and two advanced degrees. After teaching and coaching at Dyess, in 1955 he became the state's youngest school superintendent. Mr. Cox remained in Dyess and was instrumental in the consolidation of the South Mississippi County District in 1970. He later worked with the State Department of Education and served as superintendent in Mtn. View and Gosnell, where he retired in 1992, after 42 years of service in education, and moved to Little Rock. He and his wife, Polly, are members at Mabelvale Church of Christ. Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his wife Nadine, two sisters: Joy Mae Gower and Janell Parks, and two brothers: Cohen Cox and James Cox: Survivors include his wife Polly, of the home, and five children; Tony Cox of Cotter, Michael (Betty) Cox of Jonesboro, Annette (Bill) Pettit of Cotter, Philip (Vicki) Cox of Bland, Missouri, and Cindy (Burl) Rotenberry of Little Rock. He also leaves one sister, Francine Smith of Magnolia and three brothers: Bernie Lee Cox of North Little Rock, Lavell Cox of Ashland, Mississippi and Larry Cox of Hernando, Mississippi. Lynn and Nadine had 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Services for Mr. Cox will be at 10 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2014, in the Chapel of Roller-Chenal Funeral Home 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, Ark. (501) 224-8300.
