John D. Woods died April 23, 2015 in Fort Smith. He was born March 6, 1927 in Fort Smith, the son of John Rudolph (J.R.) Woods and Lucy Davis Woods. He attended public schools in Fort Smith and graduated from the University of Texas in 1946 with a degree in chemical engineering while enrolled in the U.S. Navy's V-12 program and became a commissioned officer in the Navy. A lifelong Fort Smith resident, his early years were spent in helping run the family business, Woods Manufacturing located in downtown Fort Smith. He later entered the real estate business and owned his own appraisal business, Appraisal Affiliates. He was active as a leader in many charitable and civic organizations and served on the Fort Smith Planning Commission and the Oak Cemetery Commission. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Smith. He is survived by his wife Carol Ackley Woods of the home; two children, Ambassador Anne Woods Patterson of Washington, D.C. and John Davis Woods, Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Edward Christian Patterson of Washington. D.C. USMC Captain Andrew Woods Patterson of San Diego, Calif. and John Davis Woods III of Memphis, Tenn. Memorial service will be Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church. Committal will be Saturday April 25, 2015 at 10 a.m. in the Oak Cemetery all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
