Leonard Glenn "Pete" Petersen

LEONARD GLENN "PETE" PETERSEN, 87, of Jacksonville died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014. He was born May 15, 1927 in Paradise, Iowa. Mr. Petersen served his country for 26 years in the United States Marine Corps and continued to serve at John McClellan VA Hospital as a security guard. While on active duty in the Marine Corp, he earned the rank of Gunnery Sergeant as well as many medals, including The Korean, United Nations, National Defense, Navy Occupation Service Medals, Korean PUC Good Conduct and eight USMC Good Conduct Medals, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Mr. Petersen attended many career advancement courses and instructed many courses including small arms marksmanship and mortar. He enjoyed bird-watching and being outdoors. Mr. Petersen was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Dennis Petersen and a grandson, Jessie J. Petersen. Mr. Petersen is survived by his ex-wife, Virginia Brant Petersen, his companion of over 35 years; Barbara Taylor; his children, Joy Hefner, Colleen Petersen, Steve Taylor and Ron Taylor and his wife, Elaine; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
