Roosevelt Bowden Jr. DDS was born to the late Roosevelt Bowden Sr. and Cora Bowden of West Helena, Arkansas on February 8, 1933. He was the third of seven children born to this union. He passed peacefully on Saturday, December 27, 2014. Roosevelt Bowden was a stellar student and accomplished athlete, earning a football scholarship to Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal College (Arkansas AM&N), now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He studied biology and after two years left college to enlist in the Navy. He served his country in the Korean War with honor and distinction. Afterward, Roosevelt returned to Arkansas AM&N to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1958. On July 6, 1958, Roosevelt married his college sweetheart Cleo Dorothy Williams. To this union, three children were born. Roosevelt taught Biology at Eliza Miller primary school in West Helena, Arkansas for many years. He went back to school and earned a Masters of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1968 and a DDS from Howard University College of Dentistry in 1972. He was certified in office sedation from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Bowden was a member of the Robert T. Freeman Chapter of the National Dental Association and a member of the American Dental Association. His career spanned over 30 years in private practice; Bowden Dental Centers with three locations in the suburban DC area. He also served as a professor at Howard University School of Dentistry and the Director of Residency Education at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington DC. Dr. Bowden was a life member of the NAACP and a member of the Professional and Business Council of Washington, DC. After a long and successful career, Dr. Bowden retired to Nesbit, Mississippi. He leaves wonderful memories with his three children: Dr. Phillip R. Bowden (Ritche), Dr. Marcia R. Bowden-Marche (Ira), Dr. Pamela Y. Logan (Guy) and seven grandchildren: Deen Bowden, Dia Bowden, Michelle Jones Manley, Guy Christopher Logan (deceased) Gregory Logan, Evelyn Logan, and Grant Logan; his brothers Charles Bowden (Doris) and John Bowden (Patricia); his sisters-in law, Erma Williams, Delora Williams and Cathryn Williams his brother-in-law, Lee Alfred Williams (Betty) and Dr. Alonzo Williams (Susan) and Aunt Christabell Gilcreast, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. Service Details. Visitation/Family Hour: Friday, January 2, from 3-6 p.m. at E.H. Ford Mortuary. Services: Saturday January 3 at 11 a.m. First Baptist Broad with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery.
