Verna Louisia Johnson Stallcup

Verna Louisia Johnson Stallcup, 94, of Rector passed away Friday, May 29, 2015, at NHC Healthcare in Kennett, Mo. Mrs. Stallcup was born in Battles, Ark., to the late Sky Homer and Sarah Jane (Gaither) Johnson on Oct. 7, 1920. In addition to her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Burlus Wesley Stallcup Sr.; a granddaughter, Jessica Kay Stallcup; a brother, Garland Johnson; and eight sisters, Anna Comer, Myrtle Compton, Alma Billingsley, Viola Johnson, Georgia Meeks, Selma Hockett, Jean Clark, and Nadine Huddleston. Mrs. Stallcup was a retired teacher. She was the devoted wife of a United Methodist minister and taught in many school districts as she carried on her duties as a local pastor's wife. Some of these communities included Mammoth Springs, Lake City, Blytheville, Lakeside, Newark, Joiner, Monette, Rector, Brinkley, Marion and Salem. She is survived by her son, Wes Stallcup, and his wife, Ann; a daughter, Lura Holifield and her husband, Danny, all of Rector; and a daughter, Sara Root and her husband, Chuck of Omak, Wash. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Nathan Stallcup and his wife, Kristin of Franklin, Tenn.; Amy Manchester of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; Alice Smith and her husband, Mike, of Conway, Ark.; Joanna Heller and her husband, Jake, of Spokane, Wash.; and Jeremiah Root and his wife, Annie, of Aurora, Colo.; and great grandchildren, Zoe, Zane and Zeke Stallcup and Terin Smith. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Services will be held Sunday, May 31st at 2 p.m. at the Rector First United Methodist Church with Mace Straubel officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Heights Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 p.m. until service time. Pallearers will include Nathan Stallcup, Mike Smith, Mike Zgaynor, Steven Crancer, and Landon Crancer. Acolytes will be Marla Crancer and Grayson Crancer. Mrs. Stallcup was a loving and generous woman, who throughout her life sacrificed her own needs for those of her family, the United Methodist Church, her students, and others.
