Lewis Lavon Guthrie

Lewis Lavon Guthrie, 84, died Wednesday. He was born October 30, 1931 in Bradford a son of the late Lewis A. and Allie Alexander Guthrie. Lewis, or Lavon as he was known in the Bradford area, served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a barber for many years before becoming a life insurance salesman for the Life of Georgia Company. During his years as a life insurance agent, he won numerous trips to many places including Spain. Lewis kept his mind sharp by working puzzles each morning with his devoted wife, Laverne. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and received great pleasure in raising a garden and supplying friends and neighbors with fresh vegetables. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Laverne Guthrie; a son, Keith Guthrie (Lena) of Sherwood; daughter, Tamyra Guthrie Stengel of Sherwood; brother, Johnny Guthrie of Hamburg; sisters, Nell Spencer of St. Louis and Marie Kellums of Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Jacob Deaver, Samantha Lynn Guthrie, Misty Deaver and Amanda Springer all of Sherwood; two great-grandsons, Landon and Kyle Hutcherson of Sherwood. He was preceded in death by multiple brothers and sisters. Visitation: Sunday from 6–8 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home. Services: Monday, August 8, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Sunnyside Baptist Church.
