Windsor Roland Giles of El Dorado, Arkansas, affectionately known to family and friends as "Scotty," died December 24, 2016 after a long, hard fought battle with kidney disease. Born May 27, 1930 to parents, William Roland and Lois Maroney Giles, Scotty lived most of his life in El Dorado, serving his community in various civic organizations and his church, First United Methodist, in multiple capacities. Scotty is survived by a son, Michael W. Giles and wife Shannon of West Jordan, Utah, a daughter, Elizabeth Giles Johnson and husband Michael of Little Rock, five grandchildren, Lori Giles Aleshin, Angela Giles Hilton, Mary Robin Giles Wilens, Windsor Roark Johnson and Katherine Elizabeth Johnson, and two great-grandchildren, Mariana Aleshin and Michael Kade Earnest. Preceding him in death was his loving wife of 61 years, Patsy Sue Anthony Giles, a daughter, Janet Giles, his parents, a sister, Jeanne Giles, and his great-granddaughter, Mollie Earnest. Scotty graduated from El Dorado High School in 1948 and subsequently attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where he was an active member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Scotty's college years were interrupted by his service to his country as an officer in the US Air Force. He was stationed primarily at Barksdale Air Force Base in Northwest Louisiana and briefly overseas at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, England, performing radio-navigation maintenance on B-29 bombers. While stationed at Barksdale, Scotty would hitchhike home to El Dorado every Saturday to spend a few hours with the love of his life, Patsy Sue, before hitching a ride back to the base. After his military service, Scotty returned to Arkansas to marry Pat, as well as complete his college education. He went on to pursue a pharmacy degree, ultimately graduating in the inaugural class of the UAMS School of Pharmacy in Little Rock in 1958. After moving home to El Dorado, Scotty started working in his father's pharmacy, and soon earned a drug store of his own. Giles Hospital Pharmacy, directly across from Warner Brown Hospital, became a local landmark, known for quality service and a soda fountain with food counter where regulars ritualistically gathered for the best coffee, barbecue, cold plate and fellowship in town. As an avid outdoorsman, Scotty spent countless hours fishing at the Anthony Lakehouse or deer and quail hunting in South Texas with family and his close friends. His other passion was golf. As a former club champion at El Dorado Golf and Country Club in his youth and a consistent member of the "bucket ball crew" during his retirement, Scotty was well known for a silky smooth swing even Arnold Palmer would admire. Scotty will always be remembered for his kindness, contagious positive attitude and easy-going personality. Through the years, he and Pat hosted scores of family get-togethers and lively parties with friends, providing fabulous food and loads of laughter as Scotty entertained all with his infectious smile and dry wit. He would anchor most events at the head of the kitchen table, using his remarkable recall and story-telling talent to captivate those around him with dozens of humorous tales while enjoying a Johnnie Walker scotch or two. The family gratefully acknowledges the personal commitment of Angela Hilton, Scotty's granddaughter, for her daily devotion to caring for his personal needs during his final year, as well as the assistance of Bea Fields in providing compassionate caregiving services. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on December 31st at First United Methodist Church after a family burial in El Dorado's Arlington Cemetery. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to either the Boys and Girls Club or First United Methodist Church of El Dorado.
