James Dawson Atkinson Jr.

Dr. James Dawson Atkinson, Jr., 90 of Magnolia, Ark. died Sunday, May 22, 2016 at his home in Magnolia. Jim was born February 28, 1926 in Prescott, Ark. to the late James Dawson, Sr. and June (Volway) Atkinson. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Leland Clegg Sunday School Class. Jim served in the United States Navy and the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1951 where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and Cum Laude from Loyola University School of Dentistry in 1957. He was a past President of the Arkansas State Dental Association, member and President of the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners, and a Fellow of the American Academy of General Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Magnolia for over 40 years. Following his retirement, he enjoyed regular meetings with his beloved Muffin Men. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 53 years, Glo Atkinson; and sisters Mary Edith Grant and Katherine Cavenaugh. Jim is survived by his daughters, Gail Atkinson of League City, Texas, Jamie Hazlewood of Little Rock, Holly Tubbs and husband Lem of Little Rock, Valerie Sanders and husband Cliff of Magnolia; son, Dr. Ross Atkinson and wife Carol Jo of Hot Springs; grandchildren, Chris Atkinson and wife Libby of Benton, J. Michael Hazlewood and wife Becca of Rogers, Dr. Kate Snodgrass and husband Michael of Hot Springs, Dr. Daniel Atkinson and wife Brittany of Little Rock, Drew Tubbs of Little Rock, Quinten Sanders of Little Rock, and Barrett Sanders of Fayetteville; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Elliott Atkinson of Benton, Nora Snodgrass of Hot Springs, Lucy Hazlewood of Rogers, and Dawson Atkinson of Little Rock. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 24, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lewis Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 25th at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Kelso and Rev. Raymond Cammack officiating under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc. of Magnolia. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. The family will have a private graveside service. The family would like to give a special thank you to the "Dream Team" for giving faithful and loyal care to their parents. The "Dream Team" includes Martha Sue Robinson, Mae Sue Grissom, Sheryl Hunter, Charlotte Reliford, Lyn Barnes, Demita Martin, and JoAnn Carter.
