Allen Ray Bates, passed this life peacefully on November 19th, 2017, while in the home of his children, being closely surrounded at all times by loving, compassionate and loyal Family members, who to Allen, always came first. Through God's gentle grace Allen remained comfortable despite a difficult ending to a tough battle with Pancreatic Cancer starting in June, 2017, just 5 months prior. Allen Ray Bates only just celebrated turning age 70, had also recently retired from Williams Company, of Ft. Worth, Texas as a Municipal Agent/Liaison, thoroughly enjoying his career over the past decade in the oil & gas industry. He previously worked as a Project Manager for WFI, and US Cellular where he spent another ten years working and making friends there. Allen also spent 12 years, just after college, as a City Manager in several Oklahoma towns; Nowata, Sulphur, Durant and Hominy. His smile was warm and caring, as he was but a gentle and giving soul. He held his family closest and adored his two children, who were truly the light of his life. All of the grandkids enjoyed their Papa Allen, but not nearly as much as he enjoyed them. Allen graduated from Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater, Oklahoma with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science in 1969. Graduating from Nowata High School in 1965 as an active member of the Marching Band, Allen grew up in Nowata, Oklahoma in the Home of his parents, John and Lucille Bates born to them, on September 18th, 1947. He was very proud to have shared this birthday, with his loving daughter, Carrie Ann. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Lucille Bates, a sister Joan Lavina, one step-brother, Dewey Ward and two brothers; Jerald Lee and Richard John Bates. He is survived and will be mourned and severely missed by his one young son, Barry Alan Bates and grandson Aiden Mahon Bates of Verdigris, Okla.; his only daughter, Carrie Ann Dick and son-in-law Jerrod, grandkids; Katelyn, Bond, Presleigh and Lincoln of Broken Arrow, Okla.; his oldest brother, David and wife Sandy of Tulsa, Okla.; his youngest brother, Robert and wife Janet of Lawrence, Kan.; three step-sisters respectively; Patty Taylor, Pam Sloan, and Penny Lawrence. Memorial Services will be held at the Stumpff-Nowata Funeral Home Chapel. Saturday Dec. 2nd, 2017 at 11 a.m., with Full Military Honors at the graveside following. A Celebration of Life will be held soon at the Families discretion, time and date TBA. The family requests that instead of flowers, contributions or memorials can be made to the Allen Bates Trust or directly to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN.ORG and click on the Donate Now button) in Memory or Honor of Allen Bates Family Trusts name, to further research in early detection and new treatments, as of this year, 2017, it is now the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, surpassing breast cancer. Allen would ask simply, that you all be aware. In Loving memory of our Father, your friend: Allen Ray Bates. Friends who wish may sign the online guest book and leave condolences at www.stumpff.org.
