Alan Henry Hirsch Sr., age 87, passed away Sunday June 4, 2017 at his home in Marvell. He was born December 6, 1929 in Memphis, Tennessee the son of Edmund and Irene Samelson Hirsch. Alan attended Marvell High School where he lettered in football and basketball and graduated in the class of 1947 as salutatorian. He was active in the Boy Scouts and earned the Eagle Scout Badge and years later became Scoutmaster. Alan attended the University of Arkansas where he was president of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity and the Arkansas Marketing Club. He was a member of Alpha Phi omega and in the ROTC program and was "tapped out" to be a member of "Scabbard and Blade". He graduated as an Honor Military Graduate and was selected to be in "Who's Who." On a sunny Sunday afternoon in May 1956, Alan and Mary Anne Suddath joined hands and were married and raised their family in Marvell. Alan proudly served his country in the US Air Force as the supply officer of Headquarters Squadron-Far East Ali Forces in Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War. Alan served as a volunteer fire fighter for 45 years in the Marvell Fire Department, volunteered for the open door food pantry, water commissioner for the City of Marvell, secretary of Marvell Chamber of Commerce, President of Marvell Academy Booster Club, President of Marvell Rotary Club, treasurer of Phillips County Fair Association, treasurer of Little League Baseball Association, and was selected Marvell Citizen of the Year in 2000. Alan is survived by his wife of 61 years: Mary Anne Suddath Hirsch; a daughter, Marilyn Hirsch Varnado (Ray) of Ridgeland, Miss.; four grandchildren: Sam Varnado, Mark Varnado, Alan Hirsch III, Rene Hirsch Nicholson; three great-grandchildren: Peyton Finley, Hannah Batts, and Averee Nicholson. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son; Alan Hirsch Jr., and a brother; Edmund Hirsch Jr. Visitation with family and friends will be 1-2 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Marvell United Methodist Church.
