Lane closures set for Mississippi River bridge

WEST MEMPHIS — Arkansas highway officials say lanes will be closed on the Mississippi River bridge in West Memphis as crews perform work on the bridge.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says the inside eastbound and westbound lanes of the Hernando DeSoto Bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

In the coming weeks, traffic will be affected as crews install seismic expansion joints, which provide bridge flexibility for everyday traffic and in the event of an earthquake. Traffic will first be shifted onto the eastbound lanes, then to the center-east and westbound lanes and finally to the westbound lanes. There will be two 11-foot lanes in each direction, and wide loads will be prohibited during the time.

Each traffic shift will last for about two months.
